“SIMPSON STRIDE FOR A CURE” TO RAISE FUNDS FOR PANCREATIC CANCER RESEARCH THIS WEEKEND AT ZUMA BEACH”
MALIBU, Calif – This Sunday, April 19th, a local event called “Simpson Stride for a Cure” will raise awareness and funds for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in the Malibu community through a family walk at Zuma Beach during Earth Day weekend. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the only national organization creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure. The organization raises money for direct private funding of research—and advocates for more aggressive federal research funding of medical breakthroughs in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer.
Online registration for this event is available at www.pancan.org/simpsonstrideforacuremalibu. The walk honors all those affected by pancreatic cancer and is being organized by Rita Simpson, a Realtor with Prudential Malibu Realty, in memory of her late husband Douglas Simpson, a community youth advocate and co-founder of the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu and Director (in memoriam) of the Malibu Foundation of Youth and Families. This event is proudly sponsored by the Prudential Malibu Realty Charitable Foundation, which provides grants and scholarship to local organizations that promote health, education, community and environment.
Registration for “Simpson Stride for a Cure” is $30 per person in advance and $35 on event day. Children 12 & under may register for $15. Entry fees include participation in the walk, light breakfast, and an event t-shirt. Participants will also have a chance to buy raffle tickets and bid on a guitar signed by Tom Petty.
Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States, yet it is the most under-funded, under-recognized and least-studied of the leading cancer killers. Currently, less than two percent of the National Cancer Institute’s federal research funding is allocated to pancreatic cancer. In 2008, an estimated 37,680 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and 34,290 will die.
